Sleep Apnea Alternatives
When you get diagnosed with sleep apnea, you may be a little disappointed thinking you have to sleep secured to a machine and hose just to breathe properly. Many patients aren’t aware that there are alternatives to a C-pap machine!
Firstly, we offer laser therapy as a treatment for snoring and sleep apnea. Doctors have used CO2 lasers for laser therapy of sleep apnea for about 60 years. The downside to that treatment was it was very aggressive and they would cut tissue away.
With improvement in laser procedures, we now can use a laser that is non-ablative. There is no cutting of the tissue, and therefore no downtime. The wavelength that we target the tissue with goes into the dermal layer as a long pulse, which heats the tissue, stimulating fibroblasts to produce collagen and elastin.
Tightening up the tissue that naturally sags as we age stops the snoring by at least half. Severe sleep apnea often needs a combination of procedures.
This leads us to the second option we offer to treat sleep apnea: an oral sleep appliance. After you get fitted for this device, you insert it into your mouth before bed. It moves the jaw forward and holds the tongue in place so that neither blocks the airway in your throat, which leads to snoring.
